The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony and Atsa Koodakuh Wyh Nuwu/People of Red Mountain are joining a lawsuit that conservation groups filed against Lithium Nevada Corp earlier this year. They are working to block the approval of a lithium mine passed in December by the previous presidential administration, saying they were not consulted in the approval of its location, thus violating the National Historic Preservation Act.
The disputed location is Thacker Pass in northern Nevada, which the Paiute tribe calls “rotten moon” in their language due to a historic massacre that happened there in the 1800s. Building a mine “where our ancestors’ bones, blood, and flesh form a part of the soil… would be like building a lithium mine over Pearl Harbor, Arlington National Cemetery, or the Gettysburg Battlefield,” an affidavit filed on Thursday stated.
